Personally I think the GBA translation is actually pretty bad. Not grammatically or anything, but in terms of tone. It feels like it was written by that kid in your freshman class who really, really wanted to be funny but wasn't, but kept on trying and trying oblivious to everyone else's cringing.

It feels like a bad sitcom for the most part, and even has weird immersion-breaking pop culture references from time to time. It's even more strangely compounded by the fact that all this trying-way-too-hard-to-be-quirky dialogue is constantly accompanied by these weird-looking Amano portraits of faces that look super grim and have no resemblance to the sprites. The SNES fan translation is very basic and no-frills, but it's also much more tastefully done IMO. It's a less-is-more approach and it ultimately works much better, as the game really can speak for itself in terms of events. Also there are no portraits so you can imagine the characters as they look based on the dozens of different sprites they have, and the music and overall presentation are way better. The GBA version has an audio patch that tries to improve the sound quality, but it's still inferior to the original and doesn't solve that the GBA uses completely different tracks than the original at various points, including what I consider to be an extremely critical moment in the plot.

So if you're playing the game for the first time, the SNES version is the way to go and will provide the purest experience of the creators' original vision for the game. The GBA version is worth trying on a second playthrough for the bonus dungeon, but it's not at all necessary to feel like you got your money's worth out of FFV; the original is one of the most complete-feeling games in the entire series and the ending is an extremely satisfying note to put the game down on.
